Glad Donna's Back

Reflections on Mother's Day

As a translator/linguist kind of person (there is some genetic disorder, I swear!) I can't help but notice the ambiguity in that seemingly simple heading. Were these reflections written "on" Mother's Day (i.e. about the holiday)? ...or written "on" that date? Well, a little of both, I guess. When in doubt, be vague, I always say.

Anyway, I have a few minutes here while Donna is sleeping off her jet lag. Having jet lag is something we've gotten rather good at lately. Hopefully we're beginning a new phase here where we can be in one place for a while.

Donna had to celebrate Mother's Day early while she was in San Diego where the girls are now. But I think it's kind of cool that I was able to pick her up at the airport today (early!) and take her to dinner tonight. So I get to celebrate with her, too, and treat the one who's been the amazing mother of our two kids!

My asthma's improving, and we're grateful for that. So after resting up here in Manila, we'll be heading to Palawan and moving ahead with getting settled back in the tribe and resuming translation work. We are very excited about that.

So we close another chapter in our lives. Neither of us has any parents, left now. And we (as parents) don't have kids in the home anymore. Both the girls are "launched" and doing well. Elisa and Chris just had their first anniversary a few weeks ago, and Bethy the college-grad is working and starting to map out the direction of her life as a working adult. Sure seems to happen fast, when you're looking back on it from this end of the time line.

I'll write more later, hopefully not wait quite so long. Just wanted to let everyone know what's up. And mostly, what's "up" is our spirits, being back together in one place, knowing that God is good, and that we can love and serve Him.

What's "up" with you?
